Modeling Rasmussen’s dynamic modeling problem: drift towards a boundary of safety

Abstract We build a system dynamics model based on conceptual originally proposed by safety scientist Jens Rasmussen to explore the of subject pressures for performance improvement. described forces that generate drift in boundary acceptable can push organization towards “flirting with margin” and thus operate at very high risk catastrophic failure. Simulations faithfully replicate behavior others variety scenarios. Simulation experiments further illuminate potential risky point some approaches better safety.
